Background of the study
Urban migration presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in rapidly growing regions where the influx of people can strain resources and infrastructure. In Yola South Local Government Area, Adamawa State, adult literacy programs have been implemented as a strategy to address some of the challenges associated with urban migration. These programs aim to equip migrants with the necessary skills to navigate urban life, thereby reducing the socio-economic disparities that often accompany rapid urbanization (Umar, 2023). By enhancing literacy, these initiatives provide migrants with the tools to access better employment opportunities, engage with urban governance, and integrate more effectively into their new environments. The programs focus on practical literacy skills, including reading, writing, and basic numeracy, which are critical for both personal empowerment and community development. Moreover, they incorporate modules on civic education and digital literacy to address the broader challenges of urban living. The integration of literacy education with vocational and social skills training is intended to foster a sense of belonging and promote sustainable urban development. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, local NGOs, and community organizations have further strengthened these initiatives, ensuring that the curriculum is both contextually relevant and accessible to the diverse migrant population. Despite these efforts, urban migration challenges persist, particularly in areas with limited educational resources and high levels of economic inequality. This study aims to critically evaluate the impact of adult literacy programs on addressing urban migration challenges, exploring the extent to which these initiatives contribute to the integration and economic empowerment of migrants (Bello, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Urban migration in Yola South Local Government Area continues to pose significant socio-economic challenges despite the introduction of adult literacy programs. A considerable number of migrants struggle to adapt to urban environments due to inadequate literacy skills, which limits their ability to secure stable employment and access essential services. The problem is further compounded by the rapid pace of urbanization, which often outstrips the capacity of literacy programs to reach and adequately serve all migrants. Additionally, structural challenges such as limited funding, insufficient learning materials, and a shortage of qualified educators hinder the effectiveness of these programs (Adamu, 2023). As a result, many migrants remain ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of urban life, leading to increased economic vulnerability and social marginalization. The lack of a robust monitoring and evaluation framework also makes it difficult to ascertain the long-term impact of these programs on mitigating urban migration challenges. This study seeks to address these issues by providing an in-depth analysis of the current adult literacy initiatives, identifying gaps in program delivery, and proposing targeted interventions to improve the integration and economic prospects of urban migrants (Ibrahim, 2024).
